Demetris Zeinalipour is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus, directing the Data Management Systems Laboratory (DMSL). He holds a Ph.D. (2005) and M.Sc. (2003) in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of California - Riverside, CA, USA and a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Cyprus (2000). Before his current appointment, he served the University of Cyprus and the Open University of Cyprus as a Lecturer of Computer Science. He has also been a short-term visiting researcher at the Network Intelligence Lab of Akamai Technologies, Cambridge, USA (2004), a Marie-Curie Fellow at the University of Athens, Greece (2007) and a Visiting Researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, PA, USA (2015). During 2016-2017 he will be a Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (MPI-INF), Saarbrücken, Germany.
His primary research interests include Data Management in Computer Systems and Networks, particularly Mobile and Sensor Data Management; Big Data Management in Parallel and Distributed Architectures; Spatio-Temporal Data Management; Network and Telco Data Management; Crowd, Web 2.0 and Indoor Data Management; Data Privacy Management. He is an ACM Distinguished Speaker (2017-2020), a Senior Member of ACM (also of ACM SIGMOD), a Senior Member of IEEE (also of IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Technical Committee on Data Engineering and IEEE Big Data Initiative), and Member of USENIX.
His h-index is 23, holds over 2350 citations, has an ErdQs number of 3, won 9 international awards (ACMS16, IEEES16, HUMBOLDT16, IPSN14, EVARILOS14, APPCAMPUS13, MDM12, MC07, CIC06) and delivered over 30 invited talks. He is an Associate Editor for the Big Data journal (Elsevier) and a TPC co-chair for 5 conferences and workshops (IEEE MDM'10, IEEE HuMoComP'15/MDM, DMSN'10/VLDB, ACM MobiDE'09/SIGMOD, MUSICAL'16). He was also a TPC member for major Data Management conferences including (e.g., ACM SIGMOD, VLDB, IEEE ICDE, IEEE MDM, ACM CIKM, ACM SIGKDD) and a referee for several IEEE and ACM journals (e.g., TKDE, TPDS, TIST, TMC, TEC, TVT, TC and VLDB Journal). He has participated in over 20 projects funded by the US National Science Foundation, the European Commission, the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, the Univ. of Cyprus, the Open University of Cyprus and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. Finally, he has also been involved in industrial Research and Development projects (e.g., Finland, Taiwan and Cyprus) but has also technically lead several mobile data management services (e.g., Anyplace, Rayzit and Smartlab) reaching over 25K users worldwide with over 120K sessions.
