Abstract
The talk will survey the chain of advances that lead to Deep Blue's victory over Garry Kasparov in 1997. The early chess programs will be examined first leading to Richard Greenblatt's Mac Hack in the late 1960s.
Then the careers of Chess 4.x (David Slate and Larry Atkin), Belle (Ken Thompson and Joe Condon), Cray Blitz (Bob Hyatt), and then Deep Blue (Feng-Hsiung Hsu, Murray Campbell, and Joe Hoane) will be considered. The talk will focus on the ideas implemented in the programs that yielded in the continual progress of the systems.
