Speakers: Bebo White
Topic(s): Computers and Society,E-Commerce,Emerging Technologies,Networks

Abstract
Hardly a day goes by without a news story about Bitcoin or Ethereum, two of the best known and strongest cybercurrency technologies. Opinions run the spectrum, from those who view it as mainly a monetary vehicle for criminal activity to those who praise its empowering ability for individuals disenfranchised by traditional financial systems. In between are found those who see it as the foundation for a new economy. Everyone agrees that one of the most important legacies of cybercurrency technologies is the introduction of the Blockchain ecosystem. As a network of replicated databases, Blockchain has been proposed to address integrity issues of numerous systems other than cybercurrencies.

This lecture will explain the fundamentals behind the important cybercurrencies, including Blockchain concepts and the mining process. It will also address why, in the opinion of the speaker, these systems should be taken seriously and how they have initiated important discussions, applications, and research opportunities.

(Depending upon the level of detail desired, this lecture can be presented in either one or two parts).
