IBM Research Initiatives to Bridge the Digital Divide
Speakers: Ashish Verma
Topic(s): Accessibility
Abstract
IBM is committed towards incorporating
accessibility into its products to help our clients enhance their customer base
and to improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. IBM
Human Ability and Accessibility Center (HA&AC) drives accessibility as a
worldwide IBM strategic initiative to have it as a differentiating factor into
its products and services. IBM India HA&AC, launched in November 2007, works
with various government organizations to drive the accessibility policy
framework and with various IBM divisions to develop technologies that can solve
problems experienced by people with disabilities. The UN Convention on Rights of
the People with Disabilities has become effective from 3rd May 2008. The 11th
five-year plan also contains recommendations for Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) accessibility. As a result, the policies and programs for ICT
accessibility are expected to be greatly impacted. IBM India Research Lab, in
collaboration with IBM’s worldwide research, has developed several
disabled-friendly prototypes. Automatic Hindi speech recognition is an attempt
to bridge the language barrier to access information and technology. IBM Easy
Web Browser improves the Web-surfing experience of people with low vision or
cognitive impairments.
